Title: OBJECTS IN MIRROR APPEAR CLOSER THAN THEY ARE
Year: NY,NY 1995 / Bogota, Colombia - 2003
Type: Video Performance
Objects in Mirror Appear Closer Than They Are is a video performance that uses the camera as the extersion of the performer's eye, projected onto a screen above the performative space. The viewers see exactly what the performer is seeing: his own reflection in a life-sized mirror, where he draws clumsily his own image with a marker.
Beside the mirror, there is a monitor showing pre recorded images of the same hand drawing what is seen outside of a window, capturing the motion of the people inside an architectural space. At the end of the piece, the performer erases all the drawings. All that is left is the window, the mirror and nothing else. Just like life, all that remains from a person's existence is what surrounds that person.
The performance in Bogotá was an homage to the people who died in a terrorist attack perpetrated by the Revolutionnary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a leftist, anachronistic guerrilla. Using a car bomb, they destroyed a social club, El Nogal, a 7 floor building in the northern part of the city, killing over 50 people and injuring and mutilating hundreds.
